The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball team dropped its Conference Carolinas opener this evening, as it fell to the King Tornado 3-1 at the King Student Center. The loss snaps the Abbey's five match losing streak as it fell by scores of 25-22, 19-25, 15-25 and 23-25. The Tornado improve to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas, while the Crusaders dip to 6-3 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Belmont Abbey hit .233 in the first set as it claimed a three-point win, but the Tornado outhit the Abbey the rest of the way to earn the win in four.
Hannah Schellenberg led the Crusaders with 17 kills and 14 digs, while Lydia Schellenberg and Caitlin Hankins both added nine. Abby Stine and Gabby Martinez handed out 17 and 16 assists, respectively, with Martinez adding a pair of service aces.
Defensively, freshman libero Ana Maria Pagan posted 21 digs, her third-straight match with at least 20. Hannah Schellenberg added 14, while Stine added 11 and Lydia Schellenberg added 10.
King's Summer Kremer led all players with 20 kills as she hit .326 for the match. Maribeth Kern added 11, while Kelsey Griffits and Mariah Herrington each posted ten. Olivia Underwood handed out 53 assists.
