The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball team opened its Conference Carolinas schedule with a 3-1 loss at King University this evening. The Crusaders won the first set 25-21 but the Tornado won the next three by scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-23. King improves to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Abbey falls to 1-9 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Tonight's match ended a ten match, season opening road trip. Belmont Abbey will now play ten of its next 11 inside the Wheeler Center, starting with Friday night's home opener against Southern Wesleyan at 7:00 p.m.
Tonight, the Crusaders got off to a good start as they hit .111 in the opening set and held the Tornado to a .023 attack but King's offense came alive in the next three sets to earn the win.
Hannah Schellenberg led the Crusaders offense as she recorded nearly half of the Abbey's total kills for the night with 18. Belmont Abbey totaled 40. Deidre Rodriguez added seven. Gabby Martinez handed out 20 assists and McKenna Murphy finished with ten. Martinez registered five service aces.
Defensively four players reached double figures in digs as Julie Newell led the way with 14. Rodriguez added 13, Schelleberg 12 and Martinez added ten. Schellenberg has recorded double doubles in seven of the Abbey's ten matches.
At the net Coreen Norwood posted four blocks, two assisted and two solo with Hankins adding two solo blocks.
