The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball team hit a torrid .379 as Hannah Schellenberg slammed down 17 kills and Caitlin Hankins added 13 as the Crusaders won for the fourth time in the past five matches with an easy 3-0 sweep of King this evening inside the Wheeler Center. Set scores were 25-16, 26-24 and 25-16. Belmont Abbey improves to 6-12 overall and 5-4 in Conference Carolinas, while the Tornado drop to 10-8 overall and 4-3 in league play.
Five Crusaders hit .250 or better as Belmont Abbey posted its third-best hitting percentage of the season, posting 52 kills on 103 total attacks with just 13 errors.
Schellenberg hit .359 as she posted 17 kills on 39 attacks with just three errors. She added two service aces and two assists. Hankins hit a robust .600, posting 13 kills on 20 attacks with one miscue. Dani Fortunato added eight kills and Coreen Norwood posted a .571 attack as she knocked down five kills on seven attacks with one error. Setter Gabby Martinez handed out a career-high 42 assists and registered six digs.
The defense recorded 42 digs as libero Julie Newell led all players with 15. Schellenberg added 12. At the net Norwood posted two block solos and one block assist and Fortunato had one block assist.
