The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball team ran its winning streak to three as it earned a pair of 3-0 sweeps inside the Wheeler Center this afternoon, defeating Lees-McRae and Fayetteville State. The Crusaders have won six of their last seven as they improve to 8-12 overall and 6-4 in Conference Carolinas.
In the first match of the afternoon, Belmont Abbey defeated Lees-McRae by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-17 as freshman Coreen Norwood dominated the net with five block solos to go along with seven kills and a dig. Hannah Schellenberg led all players with 15 kills. Dani Fortunato also added seven kills. Gabby Martinez handed out 37 assists.
It was the defense, however that was the story of this match. The Crusaders dug up 61 balls and recorded seven total blocks, all of them solo.
Libero Julie Newell's 22 digs led all players, while Martinez and Schellenberg had 11 each. Fortunato added ten. Along with Norwood's five blocks, Hankins added two block solos.
In the final match of the night the Abbey dismissed Fayetteville State by scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-12 as the offense hit .226. Schellenberg finished with 20 kills, reaching that plateau for the second time this season. She hit .286 for the match and Caitlin Hankins hit .600, on six kills with on errors on ten attempts. Martinez handed out 34 assists.
Defensively Newell's 16 digs led all players. She also had two service aces. Schellenberg added eight digs. Norwood recorded two block solos to give her seven in the two matches.
Belmont Abbey is back in action Wednesday when it hosts the final Conference Carolinas match of the season, welcoming Pfeiffer at 7:00 p.m.
