The Barton women's volleyball team won the final three sets after Belmont Abbey took a 1-0 lead with a dominating opening set victory as the Bulldogs captured a 3-1 road victory tonight inside the Wheeler Center. Set scores were 15-25, 25-23, 25-19 and 25-23. Barton improves to 7-8 overall and 2-3in Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey slips to 9-7 overall and 3-2 in league play.
Belmont Abbey hit .385 in the opening set as it cruised to an easy 25-15 victory, but Barton rallied with three straight wins, overcoming deficits in the final two, to earn the victory.
Senior Hannah Schellenberg led the Crusaders with 19 kills, with Coreen Norwood adding ten. Caitlin Hankins and Emily Rose added eight each. Belmont Abbey hit .153 for the match (53 kills, 157 attacks, 29 errors). Gabby Martinez handed out 48 assists. Sarah Kenney added a pair.
Defensively, Belmont Abbey outdug Barton 77-62 as Schellenberg led the way with 20. Martinez finished with 19 and Kenney totaled 15. Rose had the Crusaders lone block.
Belmont Abbey will be back in action Saturday at 2:30 as it hosts Mount Olive for Homecoming. The Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned between sets two and three.
