Belmont Abbey senior outside hitter Hannah Schellenberg logged a career-high 35 kills as the Crusaders women's volleyball team rallied from two sets down to stun Lees-McRae 3-2 this afternoon at Williams Gym in Banner Elk. Three of the five sets went to extra points as the scores were 20-25, 24-26, 28-26, 25-13 and 23-21. Belmont Abbey improves to 14-9 overall and 8-4 in Conference Carolinas, while the Bobcats drop to 5-18 overall and 4-8 in league play.
Playing for the second time in four days, Belmont Abbey earned the season sweep of the Bobcats to stay in striking distance in the Conference Carolinas Northern Division.
Schellenberg, who hit .538 with 22 kills against the Bobcats in the 3-0 Crusaders win on Wednesday, hit .384 as she smacked down 35 kills on 73 attacks with seven errors today. She added 20 digs, two service aces and a block assist. Aimee Cloninger added 11 kills with Catilin Hankins adding 10. Gabby Martinez set a new career-high with 65 assists to go along with three service aces and a pair of kills. Coreen Norwood chipped in with nine kills. 74 of the Abbey's 75 kills were assisted as the Crusaders hit .261 for the match, posting 75 kills with 23 errors on 192 attacks.
The defense posted a season-high 89 digs as Schellenberg and Martinez both had 20 to led the way. Libero Sarah Kenney added 19, Cloninger 15 and Leah Gunter 11. All but one player recorded a dig for the Crusaders.
At the net, Norwood dominated with seven block assists to set a new career-high, with Dani Fortunato adding four.
Belmont Abbey is off until Friday when it goes on the road to face Southern Wesleyan. First serve is 7:00 p.m.
