Bonito Dishes Out 20 Assists in Home Opener

BELMONT, N.C. -- Cassidy Bonito dished out 20 assists, but it was not enough as two-time defending Conference Carolinas champion Barton spoiled Belmont Abbey's home opener Friday with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-14) decision in women's volleyball third straight match.

  • After 11 matches away from home to start the season, Belmont Abbey opened Conference Carolinas play against defending champion Barton. The match was a repeat of the conference final played last November in Wilson.
  • The match was delayed a little more than an hour because of travel issues suffered by the Bulldogs. They arrived at the Wheeler Center around 7:20 p.m.

  • Barton jumped out to a quick 15-11 lead in the first set, but Belmont Abbey responded with seven straight and nine of the next 10 points to lead 20-16. The Bulldogs answered with a 5-0 run and eventually took the first set 25-23.
  • In the second set, the Bulldogs created some separation with a 6-2 spurt after leading 11-9. The Crusaders closed to within 17-13, but never got any closer.
  • A 5-0 run early in the third set propelled Barton to the win. It turned a 7-5 lead into a seven-point spread, then ended the match with seven of the set's last eight points.
  • Belmont Abbey tallied a season-low 24 kills and was outhit .184 to .009.
  • Carie Jane Valentine led the offensive effort with seven kills. Sarah Kenney paced the defense with 10 digs, while Mackenzie Chrapliwy added nine. Valentine was also strong on defense with five block assists.

  • Belmont Abbey has a quick turnaround, hosting Mount Olive on Saturday. The action on Hawaiian Day begins at 2 p.m.
